Vergina
Meteora Greece

Vergina; From an ancient queen to the dynasty of king Phillip the 2nd In 274 B.C.

Legend has it that Vergina was named after an ancient queen who ruled long ago, also in 274 B.C. This small village nestled amidst verdant hills in Northern Greece is actually where the old capital of the ancient Macedonian kingdom, Aegae, stood. Aegae lay in a valley flanked by Mounts Vermio and North Pieria, whereas the Aliakmonas River snakes its way through it. Inhabitants of this region for a time were Phrygians from Asia Minor from the 11th to the 10th centuries B.C.; they were followed by Argeans who occupied them after driving away Illyrian tribes from 9th to 7th centuries respectively. The Argead monarchs called this place Aegae and built it up into a first city of Macedon dynasty. In Pella at the end of 6th century king Archelaos’ reign started; however, its former splendors continued shining on Aegae itself.

During Philip II’s time some elements of his authority returned again into Aegai’s hands, but he met his last end here too. In 336 BC Philip II was murdered by his bodyguard during theatrical performance taking place in Aegeae theatre whereupon young Alexander (the Great) was proclaimed king over Macedon’s after him as well. Afterward, Philip II received magnificent burial at Aegai’s gravesite.

During its height between 11th – 14th centuries it ranked third after Constantinople (now Istanbul) as well as Thessaloniki among major cities within Byzantine Empire . The numerous Byzantine and Post-Byzantine churches that abound in this particular area have earned it a nickname ‘Little Jerusalem’. In fact today there are 48 preserved such structures in Veria’s center.
