Stand in awe of what is considered the most perfect example of classical architecture in the world, the awesome Parthenon, designed as a shrine to Athena and at one time housing a massive gold and ivory statue of the warrior goddess. Reinforced by the hand of man, the natural fortress of the Acropolis stands 690 meters | 230 feet above the city. We will drive by the feet of Acropolis through Plaka (old Athens) and we’ll visit the Greek ancient agora and Roman agora.
The ancient agora (market), in Athens. Walk in the footsteps of all well known philosophers, artist, and scientists that used to spend their hall day here. Later in the 1st century AD Apostle Paul did the same as he visited Athens. It was an eclectic mix of private housing and public spaces, until it was thoroughly re-organized by Peisistratus in the 6th century BC. As one did in the ancient world, Peisistratus pulled rank and continued to live on the agora, but he wasted no time evicting everyone else and removing their houses as well. Peisistratus closed the drinking water wells and turned the whole area into the epicenter of Athenian government. He also built a drainage system, fountains and a temple to the Olympian gods. Later Cimon improved the agora even further by constructing new buildings and planting trees, and by the 5th century BC, there were temples to Hephaestus, Zeus and Apollo located in the ancient agora. Public meetings to discuss ostracism were held routinely, and the Democracy Period (after 509 BC) saw the many and varied ruling bodies congregate in the agora, and the law courts were located here as well. Ancient custom dictated that when a court case was being heard, any citizen who happened to be passing by could be forced to serve as a juror. Scythian Archers, an early version of a mercenary police force, often wandered through the agora specifically looking for jurors. Needless to say, the agora was given a wide berth by those who were at all gainfully employed. As we all know history repeats itself, during Byzantine times, Athens’ agora once again became a residential area and now is one of the city’s most visited landmarks. You will take a leisurely stroll to see the main highlights.
