Patmos The Cave of the Apocalypse, Greece

A Sacred Site in Patmos

The Grotto of St. John, also known as the Cave of the Apocalypse, is one of the most revered religious sites in Christianity. This sacred cave is believed to be the place where St. John the Theologian (Apostle John) received the divine visions that became the Book of Revelation, the final book of the Bible.

According to tradition, St. John was exiled to Patmos by the Roman Emperor Domitian around 95 AD. Inside the cave, John’s disciple Prochoros is said to have recorded his prophetic revelations. The cave was later transformed into a pilgrimage site and is now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site (along with the Monastery of St. John).

What to See Inside the Grotto: The rock fissure where John is said to have heard the voice of God. A small iconostasis (altar) and religious icons, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere. The indentations in the rock, believed to be where John rested his head while in deep prayer.

Location & Accessibility: The Grotto is situated between Skala (the port) and Chora (the capital) of Patmos. Accessible via a short hike or drive, with steps leading down to the cave.

This is a must-visit site for history lovers, pilgrims, and anyone seeking a moment of reflection on this beautiful Greek island.

The Monastery of St. John the Theologian is one of the most significant religious and historical sites in Patmos, Greece. Perched on a hill above Chora, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was founded in 1088 AD by Saint Christodoulos, a Byzantine monk, to honor Saint John the Theologian, who wrote the Book of Revelation on the island.

The monastery resembles a fortress, built to protect against pirate attacks. Its massive stone walls, arched gateways, and battlements make it one of the most impressive monasteries in Greece. Inside, visitors will find beautiful Byzantine frescoes, ancient manuscripts, and religious artifacts.
The monastery houses sacred relics, rare icons, and a stunning chapel dedicated to Saint John. Pilgrims visit to pay homage to the saint and experience the monastery’s peaceful, spiritual atmosphere.
