The 3 days private tour in the footsteps of St Paul, and the apocalypse of St. John in Patmos, start from Athens.

The Athens Acropolis
The Kariadides on the Acropolis
The Kariadides on the Acropolis

No tour would be complete without a visit to the most important sites of the city, including of course the crown of the city, the Acropolis, and the Mars Hill where St Paul delivered his famous sermon. Visit the “Mars Hill”, where Apostle Paul proclaimed the word of the Christian God to the Athenian philosophers. The element that caused a shock to some Athenians was the concept of Resurrection, which was a powerful argument in the truth of St Paul’s teaching.

The tour in Athens includes visits to all major highlights of the city, such as the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Parliament House, the Presidential Palace, the Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympic games took place in 1896), the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Academy, the University and the National Library.

The private tour will also take you to some of the must-see quarters of Athens, such as Monastiraki, Plaka, the ancient and the roman agora which was the heart of Athens in antiquity, and the meeting point of Saint Paul with the first followers of Christianity in Athens.

Of course, before we drive to the most important Byzantine monastery in Athens, Daphni, it’s a must-see the renowned hill of Athens, Lycabettus, offering panoramic views of the city.

The Monastery Of Daphni

It is time now to visit the famous 11th-century AD monastery of Daphni, one of the greatest masterpieces of the Byzantine Empire located close to Athens!

At the western entrance of the Athens basin, on the outskirts of the Haidari Grove, on Athens Avenue, is the largest Byzantine monastery of Athens (Attica), the Monastery of the Dormition of the Virgin, known as the Daphni Monastery.

It is a UNESCO-protected monument, as its architecture, its size, and its incomparable quality of mosaic decoration, which indicate its relation to Constantinople, classify it as one of the most important monuments of the Byzantine era and designate it as a Monumental Monument.

Alternatively, you can visit the Monastery of Kaisariani, which was founded in the 11th century A.D. and is of significant Christian interest, as it is consecrated to the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple. The evening is free, allowing you time to wander around the city of Athens.

We will then reach the coastal district of Palaio Faliro. This is the area where St Paul arrived with the escort of Beroes after his departure from Veroia and Thessaloniki.

After finishing our private tour in Athens late in the afternoon, we’ll transfer you to Piraeus port to catch the ferry to Patmos Island. Overnight in the boat in a private cabin. Arriving at Patmos port Skala, our local driver will be there holding a sign with your name written on it, in order to transfer you to your hotel.

Day 2: Discover The Holy Patmos Island

Patmos Island, Greece
Patmos Island, Greece

Patmos, the island of the apocalypse; In 95 AD St. John, the theologian wrote the last book of the new testament in the Cave of Apocalypse. God revealed to John by tapping on the ground. For that, the island is considered God-trodden and called Jerusalem of the Mediterranean.

The monastery, reminiscent of a Byzantine castle, of St. John the Theologian and Evangelist, is standing like a crown on the hill of Patmos Chora. Morning breakfast and pick up from the hotel to visit the Grotto of the Apocalypse. The frescoes to the left of the entrance portray the miracles and travels of St. John the Evangelist, as written by Prochorus, a supposed disciple.

The fresco to the right of the entrance portrays St. John’s battle with the priest of Apollo at Patmos, by the story said called Kynops. St. John threw Kynops into the water of the harbor at Skala, and Kynops turned to a stone. Today the rock is still pointed out as a local landmark in the harbor of Patmos island.

Next visit the Monastery of St. John and The Chapel of Virgin Mary: 12th-century frescoes were uncovered by the 1956 earthquake that shattered the 17th-century coverings. Continuing our visits we’ll stop at the village of Grikos, to enjoy the freshness of a drink by the sea or even a swim at the beach! Free evening to enjoy the island. Overnight in Patmos.

Day 4: Patmos, Lipsi

Day trip to Lipsi with a local boat. Pilgrimage to the church of Our Lady of Charos celebrated on 23 August. The name “Charos” comes from the miraculous image of Mary depicted holding the Crucified Jesus. Back to Patmos. Boarding the ferry boat and returning to Piraeus the next day early in the morning. Overnight in the boat in a private cabin.

After taking some amazing photos of the canal, our next visit will be in ancient Corinth, one of the major stops of St Paul, who spent 18 months there, preaching to the locals, Gentiles, and Jews.

Since his stay in Corinth caused him much difficulty, he wrote four letters to the locals (Letters to Corinthians). You will have the chance to see the Acropolis (Acrocorinth) overlooking the city of Corinth and make a tour of the ancient Corinth which was one of Saint Paul’s beloved cities.

You will have the chance to visit the Ancient Market and the Bema of Apostle Paul, and we will walk at the same paths that Apostle of Nations walked and preached hundreds of years earlier. Visit the commercial town of Corinth and The Apostle Paul metropolitan church, on the street of the same name, which was founded by Apostle Paul around 51-52 AD. Next visit Kechrias Port. Around 52 AD, Paul arrived from Athens to Corinth, and stayed in Corinth for eighteen months, establishing and consolidating the Church of Corinth. After the end of his visit to Corinth, his next journey to Syria began.

Continuing the private tour you will visit St Paul Cathedral where its scene is preserved, which is a living monument of Orthodoxy. They are one of these convents that receive hundreds of pilgrims from all over the country daily.

We will take now the highway to North Greece, and before Lamia, we will turn to the way to Meteora, Kalambaka. Return and overnight in Kalambaka/Kastarki.
